milkweed, the plant, found in a variety of places, gardens, roadsides, swamps and ditches. it is the host plant for monarch butterflies. a migrating butterfly will lay eggs on the underside of a milkweed leaf. when the egg hatches, the plant serves as both home and food to the growing caterpillar, and it will stay there until it is ready for chrysalis formation.
